PENALTIES 101

A penalty is entered into the scoreboard when it causes the player’s team to skate fewer players.

*** WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK THE REFEREE! ***

PENALTY DEFINITIONS:

Minor:  2 minutes.  Team skates a player short unless opposing team has offsetting Minor called at same time (“Coincidental Minors”).  If skating a player short and at fewer than opponent and opposing team scores, the penalty ends.  (The penalty does not end if skating 4 on 4.)

Double Minor:  Two consecutive minor penalties for same player…MUST BE ENTERED AS TWO PENALTIES.  Effect is the same as a Minor except that if skating a player short and opposing team scores during the first 2 minutes, the first penalty ends and the second one begins.

Major:  5 minutes…effect is the same as a Minor except that a goal does not end the penalty.  Note – if one player receives a Major and a Minor at the same time, the Major is served first.

Misconduct:  10 minutes or remainder of game.  The player is out, but the team does not lose a skater, so nothing is entered on the board.  However, there is almost always an associated Minor or Major, which is served by another player (as is a penalty on the goalie or a coach), and which might be (as discussed above) put on the board.

SPECIAL EXAMPLES

Minor + Misconduct (“2 & 10”): Player is out for 10 - 12 minutes (depending on whether or not goal is scored during the Minor), but team only skates short for the Minor.  Only the 2-minute Minor is entered on the board.

“Coincidental” (or “Offsetting”) Minors or Majors: Penalties called on players for each team at same time.  The teams will remain at the same skater count, so the penalties will not be entered on the board.

BASIC ENTRIES

When in doubt, start with [Set]….except when clearing penalties.

Entering clock time:
[Set] [Time] 12: [Yes] 1
                                                   (12 minutes, Period 1)

– you don’t need the 0’s after the “:”
– enter [blank] for Period # during warm-ups or “0” for overtime

Entering a penalty:

a)    [Set] [Home Penalty] 2: [Yes] 07                      (2 minute minor, Player # 7)

b)    [Set] [Guest Penalty] 5: [Yes] 88                      (5 minute major, Player # 88)

c)    [Set] [Guest Penalty] 2: [Yes] 37   [Set] [Guest Penalty] 2: [Yes] 37
(4 minute double-minor (each 2 minutes), Player # 37)

– you don’t need the 0’s after the “:”
– you must enter a two-digit number for the player’s number.  It is not posted, but you should try to use the correct number because it matters if and when a second penalty is entered.  If for the same player number, the second one won’t start until the first one ends.

Clearing a penalty:

       [Home Penalty] [Penalty Clear] [Yes]

only clear minor penalties

Goals and Shots on Goal:

These can either be set to a specific number or incremented from the current number.  Let’s say the Home team has 3 goals on 11 shots, then scores.
[Set] [Home Score] 4                               OR         [Home Score] 1   (adds 1)
and
[Set] [Home Shots] 12                             OR         [Home Shots] 1    (adds 1)

If you make an incorrect entry that causes the number to be too HIGH, you must use the “[Set]” method to revert to a lower number.  The “increment” method only adds numbers.

INPUTTING PENALTIES DURING RUN-CLOCK TIME

Penalty time starts running down as soon as the player’s number is entered and the clock is running.

1.    STOP clock when referee arrives at scorer’s bench or when ready to enter the player’s #.  Stopping too early can add too much time to total game time.

2.    START clock at drop of puck.
